BOOK FAIR INFORMATION:

During goal setting conferences next week, Ms Nikon is running a Book Fair to raise funds for Hudson’s library. This is to supplement her tiny annual budget for the library, barely allowing her to replace books that get worn out or outdated each year. And she has books in French and English to buy! The Scholastic company offers commission either in books or cash for total sales at the fair.
Parent volunteers are helping out because this school/teacher-driven fundraiser takes a lot of time and work. In fact, Ms Nikon would welcome any parent(s) who are willing to be in charge of running this Book Fair annually, with her help. As you come and peruse the selection of books, think about whether you or you and some other parents may be able to team up and help out in the future. (Feel free to contact Chantal at minten@novuscom.net if you are interested in getting more information about doing this.)

CONTEST:
Ms Nikon has sent home a note with every student attached to a Scholastic preview ad.  On the back of the ad, there is a form to enter a draw to win $25 worth of books for your classroom and $25 worth of books for your own bookshelf.  Please make sure your child deposits ONE entry in the draw box at the Book Fair before FRIDAY, MARCH 6th.
FORMS OF PAYMENT:
Credit card (Visa and Mastercard), cheque and cash are all accepted.
FRENCH:
There will be a small selection of French books.

Petition re: Education Funding in Upcoming Provincial Budget

Protect Public Education Now, a parent group advocating for quality public education in British Columbia, has organized an online petition to the provincial government.  It asks that the government commit to using some of the projected surplus in the coming provincial budget to make a start at restoring funding removed from public education over the last several years.  The government’s own earlier public consultation process around the budget identified education funding as a high priority.

Please see the petition at the group’s website, ppen.ca, which also has details and a suggested template for a letter writing campaign.
At the PAC general meeting on Wednesday night, we agreed to ask all Hudson parents to consider signing the petition over the next few days — the organizers are hoping for at least 5000 signatures before the budget is released next Tuesday, February 17.  If you are so moved, following up with a letter would also be great!

Final Call for Parent Volunteers – Hudson Library

Dear Parents;

This is my last attempt to try to have a Scholastic Book Fair this year and I will need parent volunteers to dedicate one or two hours to make this work.  I will manage the Book Fair, so it comes down to just having parents work the Book Fair for an hour or two.
The Book Fair is a tradition at Hudson, and I would like it to continue.  The Book Fair credit earned goes  to provide the Library with the latest in great reading materials for your children from Scholastic.
Book Fair Dates & Hours:    during Report Card Conference times:
Wed, March 4th (2-5 pm)  &  Thur, March 5th   (2 – 4 pm)  possibly Fri, afternoon
Location:   Gym
SET-UP:    The Book Fair will come in large display cases on wheels that open up (instant display for Book Fair)  and lock closed (cases can stand against walls so P.E. classes can continue in the gym during the day).
Posters and pencils can be displayed outside of a case and locked securely in the gym kitchen location during the day.
Parent Volunteers to work cash and manage Grade 6/7 student volunteers.
I could possibly extend the hours into mornings before school if I had enough parent volunteers for those times.
Please contact me in the library if you are able to help out!   I will make my decision based on your response to this request by the end of next week.
**Or send an email to Chantal at minten@novuscom.net

Thank you!
~Ms. Nikon
