Bike to School Week Info 2016

Thank you to our sponsors this year: More Bikes Booster Juice

Bike to School Week
Monday, May 30th-Friday, June 3rd
Bike to School Week has become a tradition at Hudson since before my grade 6 son began in kindergarten. It is a healthy school initiative and is organized each year by HUB Your Cycling Connection (see above website for more information). It is all about getting kids on bicycles to keep them healthy, active in their community and to gain knowledge about at least one form of “clean” transportation. It coincides with Bike to Work Week this year and the weather is looking fair for most of the week. Here are some of the activities going on at Hudson this week to celebrate:
All week long:
Coal Harbour Convoy – Ride bikes together to school! Meet at Coal Harbour Community Centre at 8:15, leaving at 8:25, right outside the main entrance.
Parents of three Hudson students, Peter & Dana, have volunteered to ride with other interested Coal-Harbour-commuting students from Coal Harbour to Hudson. To contact Peter, here is his cell: 604-506-3630 and email: pvd@naviform.com. (After school return rides will be determined by Peter & Dana’s sons’ after school activities. Please discuss with Peter.)
If you wish to be a fearless bicycling leader, please send me your meeting point and start time at minten@novuscom.net and I will let the community know. This is a great way to get involved!
Tracking Hudson’s bike trips – all students riding bicycles to school are asked to place a provided purple wheel sticker for each day on Hudson’s tracking poster set up inside the entrance door near the bike racks. If students choose to come to school in another active way (for example: by scooter, rollerblades, bus, carpool, skateboard, walking), please place one of the other coloured stickers on the poster each day. (Stickers can be found next to the poster on the wall.) HUB keeps track of which school has the most students participating and gives prizes to some of the top schools. Hudson’s enthusiasm has paid off in the past!
  • Monday, May 30th – 8:15-9am Biker’s Breakfast
Come join us for a healthy continental breakfast by the bike racks and learn how to track your rides to school for the rest of the week!
  • Wednesday, June 1st – 8:15-9:05am Free Safety Checks by MORE BIKES (www.morebikes.ca with locations on 4th near Burrard and Wesbrook Village at UBC)
This neighbourhood bike store is owned by one of our Hudson families and Don and Lucy have been coming to the school for years to make sure our bikes are safe. Parent and student bikes are welcome!
  • Thursday, June 2nd – 12:10-1pm Bicycle Decorating @ Lunch hour
Primaries are invited to bring their bikes to a decorating station where artistic intermediates will be encouraged to help them transform their “wheels”. Prizes and beverages for all participating!
If you have any questions or would like to become involved, please don’t hesitate to contact Chantal at minten@novuscom.net.
