Looking for Riders & Volunteers for Bike to School Week May 29 to June 2!
Bike to School Week is sponsored by the non-profit organization HUB (bikehub.ca) and coincides with Bike to Work Week. We were offered a free bicycle education package for our oldest grades by HUB in April because of our participation in Bike to School Week in past years. This spring students practiced bike safety and basic bike mechanics and ended the experience with group rides on roads around Hudson.
Traditionally, we kick off Bike to School Week with a Biker’s Breakfast and attempt to track the number of students riding their bikes to school during this week. Prizes are offered for schools with most ridership, best stories, etc.
We are looking for volunteers to help with this initiative: to help organize activities to make it fun for students to bring their bikes to school, to chaperone some students in their neighbourhood who wish to take bicycles to school during this week, to gather sponsorship to help fund prizes and activities and to bring new ideas to this long-time initiative.
Now that the weather is getting better you can help the Hudson community encourage our students to be active in their choices to get to school everyday, including using their bikes and the many bike paths around Vancouver. Please contact Chantal if you can help. minten@novuscom.net
Cycling BC’s iRide will also be coming to Hudson May 29th, June 5th and June 19th for 3 Mondays of cycling workshops for grades 5, 6 & 7’s. Parents & guardians, please watch out for information regarding necessary waivers. This low-cost initiative is paid for by the PAC. Any comments or questions regarding these programs, please feel free to be in touch with Chantal at minten@novuscom.net
The Henry Hudson Summer Fair is just around the corner! Mark your calendars: June 23, 3pm to 5:30pm.
Please help us to prepare for this event by pre-ordering* your child’s wristband (bouncy castle/games) and tickets (pizza/hotdogs/raffle/cake walk). Order forms will go home in backpacks on Friday May 19.
*Pre-ordering helps the PAC gauge attendance so we order enough food and means no need to line up or bring cash on the day. So please help us by ordering in advance.
Want to donate/volunteer?

  • Got a company or personal business donation (Gift Certificate or other swag) for the raffle or silent auction? E-mail Nina at njanepatel@gmail.com.

Spring Cleaning in the Library
After a year of being well-loved by many little hands and homes, the books need a wash – a wipe down with some soapy water will help refresh the books for next year’s use. Times are flexible. For example, volunteers could come an hour before the end of school or organize a work crew of friends. For more information, or to sign up, please contact Ms. Nikon at cnikon@vsb.bc.ca

Vancouver School Board 2017-2018 budget process:
The VSB official trustee approved the proposed budget for 2017-2018 on April 26. The relevant board meeting minutes will be posted shortly with the final approved budget, which includes cuts to services and programs to meet a $2.1 million shortfall, at http://www.vsb.bc.ca/2017-2018-budget-updates. The report on the survey the VSB conducted as their public input process can now be found on that page; the VSB refrained from reporting on the responses to the three questions asking the public to prioritize areas of spending as these questions were widely criticized by DPAC, parent advocacy groups and individuals.
Public Education Advocacy
Links to recordings of recent public events focused on public education (DPAC all-party forum with MLA candidates, SFU’s panel of education critics in conversation with a former BC education minister, etc.) will be posted on the Hudson PAC advocacy page as the event organizers make them available.
Non-partisan background on education issues can be found at http://www.panvancouver.ca (the Parent Advocacy Network) and https://www.youtube.com/user/educmatters (SFU’s Faculty of Education’s television program about education issues).
If you have questions about any of the above, please contact Hudson’s representative to DPAC, Alan Patola Moosmann, 778-998-8596, apatola@telus.net.

Weekly Reminders for May 1-5 2017

The PAC Calendar for May is now available on the website https://hudsonpac.ca/calendar/
Friday is a Pro-D Day No School!!
Suggestions for Extra Curricular Activities
Do you have a great idea for an extracurricular activity at Hudson, but don’t know how to turn that idea into a programme? To make it easy, we have mapped out the steps that need to be taken to bring that idea to reality. You can check them out through the link at the top of the activities page https://hudsonpac.ca/activities/ Please note that the deadline for fall term programme submissions is Friday May 13. After this date, all new proposals will be considered for Term 2.
Contacting CST in Case of Absence
If your child is registered in a Community Schools Team Afterschool Program (e.g. Choir, Young Rembrandts, MoreSports Soccer), please let Dianne Sankey know if they will not be attending on the day of the program. She can be reached at 604 813 8776 or dsankey@vsb.bc.ca
This will decrease the amount of time programme staff spend tracking down late students, and allow them to focus on those who are on time and keen to start the class. If your child attends HOOSC, please remind their staff to bring your child to the activity after they have signed in. Please remind your children the morning of the program that they should attend. Thanks for your help!
District Wide Earthquake Drill
On Thursday, May 4, from 2pm to 2:45pm, Henry Hudson School will be conducting a mock student- parent emergency reunification. Mr Cannon needs parent volunteers to sign their children out at 2:30 pm. Parents or emergency pick up contacts will report to the Check In table, show ID and let staff confirm the person picking up a student is listed with the school. Emergency drills help us to be better prepared in the event we need to conduct such an event with a real emergency. Parents able to volunteer for the mock release are asked to contact the office. hdubuc@vsb.bc.ca
Babysitting Certification Course
Don’t forget the Babysitting Certification course for students in grades 6&7 is on Friday, May 5 from 9am to 5pm. The course is taught by Pacific First Aid Training and will cover basic first aid, teach how to respond to choking, bleeding, poisoning and burns, and cover child care skills and the rights and responsibilities of a babysitter. Students should bring snacks, lunch and a water bottle as food will not be provided. If you have any questions, please contact Dianne Sankey from the Community Schools Team at
604 813 8776 or dsankey@vsb.bc.ca
“Bathroom Break”
Beginning May 1st, the VSB will be repairing the boys’ and girls’ washrooms. The process will take a week for each washroom. The girls’ washroom will be first for maintenance and will be closed for the week. Students will use the toilets in the gym while the main building washrooms are closed.
May 9 is the Provincial Election
Keep BC Education in mind when you vote!

April 2017 Public Education Events

DPAC Representative Report – Public Education Advocacy Events in April
Here are details of some events coming up in the next few weeks. Please note that this is FYI only and not intended to state positions for the Hudson PAC or its Executive.
Vancouver School Board 2017-2018 budget process:
The proposed budget was put up on the VSB website late last week. Cuts are proposed to deal with an anticipated deficit of $2.1 million dollars. Details are available at www.vsb.bc.ca/district-news/vsb-online-survey-now-open-feedback-budget, click on the “Summary of budget proposals” link at the bottom of the page.
The timeline for public review and input is very short. There is a survey which can be accessed until 5:00 pm on April 18 through the above link or at govsb.ca/budgetsurvey. If you are interested in completing the survey, please note that you can only open it once from any one email address — if you open it to take a look at the questions, intending to think about them and fill them out later, and then exit the survey, the site will not let you back in!
The only opportunities for the public to provide input face-to-face presentations to the Board are:
Tuesday April 11 – 5:00 to 7:00 pm. VSB committee of the whole meeting, Vancouver School Board main office, 1580 West Broadway. To register to make a presentation, email budget2017-2018@vsb.bc.ca.
Monday April 24 – 7:00 to 9:00 pm. VSB committee of the whole meeting, Vancouver School Board main office, 1580 West Broadway. The survey results will be presented at this meeting, along with any revisions to the proposed budget. Public input commenting on the revision can be made at this meeting.
Also: Thursday April 13 – 7:00 to 9:00 pm. DPAC executive meeting, Vancouver School Board main office, 1580 West Broadway. VSB staff will make a presentation about the proposed budget. DPAC executive meetings are open to all parents/guardians of children in Vancouver public schools to attend and ask questions.
The VSB board will meet for final approval of the budget on Wednesday April 26 at 7:00 p.m.
Public education and the provincial election
The provincial election is coming up Tuesday May 09.
Two related events:
Tuesday April 11, 7:00 – 9:00 pm – BC Public Education: In Dialogue with Critics of Provincial Education Policy – at SFU Woodwards (Goldcorp Centre for the Arts, 149 West Hastings Street). George Abbot, former BC education minister, with a panel of school, student and parent representatives, will discuss BC’s education policy today and what is needed for the future success of students. The conversation will be moderated by Katie Hyslop, education and youth reporter for “The Tyee”. Please see the attached flyer (“YEM“) for more details.
Tuesday April 25, 7:00 – 9:00 pm, DPAC’s MLA candidate education forum, Room 180, Vancouver School Board main office, 1580 West Broadway. This event will feature two local candidates from each of the Liberal, New Democratic and Green parties, and will be moderated by Vancouver Sun education reporter Tracy Sherlock. Please see the attached flyer (“MLA forum“) for registration and more details.
For one analysis of public education funding issues, please see the attached report by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives and the BCTF – Education underfunding, how does it add up? Please also visit http://www.panvancouver.ca/declaration.html for a statement by PAN and eight other B.C. parent advocacy groups made in February to the Premier, Minister of Finance and Minister of Education which is worth a look for a summary of issues facing public education and a series of requested actions.
If you have questions about any of the above, please contact Hudson’s representative to DPAC, Alan Patola Moosmann, 778-998-8596, apatola@telus.net
